History :: Our Vansh

He had a pragmatic approach towards education and emphasized that girls must be educated at any cost. He had a title of Subeydar which was awarded by Nawabs & Maharajas and kept by British in the army only. A Subeydar had a power of present day rank of a commissioner.

Dr. Atma Singh had six children as follows:

1. Thakri (Diraj) Kaur - Married to Sardar Barkat Singh, She has four sons , Harsaran Singh- deceased, Manohar Singh- deceased, Malook Singh and Satti Singh deceased one daughter Rabinder Kaur Khandari who lives in London.
2. Janki Kaur - Married to Sardar Hari Singh, who was uncle (Chacha) of Major Lochan Singh.
She has seven children :

4. Capt. Basant Singh - He has three sons Jagjit Singh , Harcharan – deceased & Gajinder Singh & Jagjit Singh – He had three sons one of them died and one girl. Boys name Jaswinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh and Avneet Kaur.Harcharan has one son Babbu and two girls in India.
5. Gajinder - He has two sons, one of his son Rajeev Chowdhry is in Canadian Foreign Service and second son Sanjeev is a Nurse.
6. Dr. Jagdish Singh - He had son Baldev Singh and lives in Bangkok.
7. Narinjan Singh - He had one son Kaka who married Chani granddaughter of Dayal Singh and two daughters one was Mohina and other Amrit (deceased).
8. Gurbachan Singh - He has one son Mr Amarjeet Singh- deceased.
9. DlerKaur - She married Brig.(Dr.) Man Singh son Karam Singh of Kallar. They have four children.
1. Gobind - Married Mamohan Singh Bedi ( 1926-1986) who was grandson of Sir Baba Gurbax Singh. They have two sons ,Vikram Singh Bedi ( 1949- ) and Col.Pushpinder Singh Bedi( 1951-2008).
2. Dr. Sarinder Mansingh (1928-2006) - Professor & Head of the Urology Department AIIMS, New Delhi .He has two children son Dr.Ajit Mansingh who has two sons, and daughter Gita Mansingh married to Sunil Agarwal.
3. Lt. General Gurbir Mansingh (1931-2006) - He had two children son Alok Singh and daughter Oona Mansigh ( 1963-1996) who founded NGO Aarohi with her husband Dr.Sushil and died tragically with her daughter Ilya in a case of accidental mushroom poisoning.
4. Prof. Surjit Mansingh ( 1937- ) - She stood first in Indian Foreign Service Entrance Exam . As a member of Indian Foreign Service and served in Paris, Washington and New Delhi. She married Professor Charles Heimsath (died 1983) and two sons Arjun Mansingh-Heimsath & Kabir Mansingh-Heimsath. Both her sons are academics in USA.Surjit is a Professor at the American University in Washington DC.
10. Narinder Singh - He has three children Bir Singh, Kitty Singh and Kaka Singh.
11. Manohar Singh - He has one son.
12. Brig. Lochan Singh - He has one son.
13. Kunti( Ranee ) Kaur - he has one son who is Lt.Col now retired.
14. Major Gurdit - He has two children.
15. KhemiKaur - She has four sons. Brig. Trilochan Singh Chowdhury, Narinder Singh & Manohar Singh were her elder brothers.
16.Palan Kaur - She was married to Iqbal Singh Bakshi ( son of Bakshi Barkat Singh) , M.A.M.O.L.B.T.,PES who was the youngest Headmaster at Kahuta at that time. They have three sons ,Col.Kulbir Singh Bakshi, Mitter Bir Singh ( now in USA) and Late Gurbir Singh. Their daughter Kiran married Col.Gurvinder Singh ( son of Col.Sardul Singh) and Tesh Bir Kaur married to Jagdish Singh of Burma.
17. Jeeto Kaur - She has one son who was Col. & now retired and one daughter.

Ch.Dayal Singh was the eldest of his siblings and was responsible for their education .He was a successful livestock merchant. He got Married to Bhagwanti ( daughter of Ch.Hari Singh , granddaughter of Ch.Matwal Singh and great granddaughter of Ch.Bhaag Singh of Bansawali Haakmaal Khandan). She had three brothers Sardar Tara Singh, Sardar Kahan Singh and Sardar Partap Singh.

As in any patriarchal society after the death of his father Dr. Atma Singh he assumed the responsibility of head of the family and told his brothers and sisters not to stop dreaming big. He kept his father’s dream alive of giving importance to education and sent his youngest brother Chacha Kahn Singh to UK for higher education in 1915.

As an eldest in the family he looked after everybody. During the 2nd plague epidemic in November – December 1917, he along with his nephew Jeet Singh took the responsibility of cremation ( highly contagious ) of the dead. Among the dead was his own daughter Chhatro ( Surasti mother of Bhapa Jodh Singh ) . Bhapa Jodh Singh writes in “ History Of Kahuta “ that he died whilst listening to Sukhmani Sahib Path Ashtpati 16 ( Abnashi Prabh Mey Raakh) . He was eighty five and had no ailment or any kind of suffering and died in full senses.

Dr Arjan Singh - He had four daughters and one son.
1. Surjit singh ( Died 1947 ) - He was killed in Kahuta during Partition in 1947. He was married to Khem Kaur daughter of Dr. Ram Singh & Kulwant Kaur.He was known to be first casualty of the riots. Khem Kaur gave birth to a baby girl ( Ranjit) after the death of Surjit and was brought up by her grandparents. Ranjit was married to Bakshi Dharambir Singh and have one boy and two girls who are well settled. Both Ranjit and her husband Bakshi Dharambir Singh are now dead.
2. Tej Kaur - Married to Sardar Harbans Singh.
3. Basant Kaur - Married to Col.(Dr.) Kripal Singh
4. Prakash Kaur - Married to Pritpal Singh
5. Rajinder Kaur - Married to Dr.Inderjit Singh she has only one son.

3. Harnam Kaur - Married to Dr. Trilok Singh and had three sons and one daughter.

5. Narinder Kaur - Married to Sr. Mohinder singh and had three sons and one daughter.
6. Jasbeer Kaur - She had three Sons and One Daughter.
7. Bhagwant Kaur - Married to Harish Chander Gupta , Advocate Supreme Court and had three sons and one daughter.

He married Chachi Devke. He was the first in our family to come to UK and was called up to join Bar At Law. He had four sons and two daughters from his first wife Chachi Devti. He married Dr. Chandravati probably in Ghana ( in those days it was called Gols Coast, West Africa) where he was posted as Colonial Civil Servant – similar to Indian Civil Service. Cachi Chandravati was the first house wife in our clan who had a full time job as a doctor. During 1947 riots she was very helpful and made sure that each and every one from Kahuta had a blanket and food to eat in WAH , Camp near Rawalpindi. They were divorced and she married Dr.Parmar and lived in Kashmir and Himachal. She has one son from Chacha Kahn Singh and his name is Inder Parmar.
